The Sol System

The Sol System is a reasonably average star system approximately
28,000 light years from the galactic core.  It formed 4.6 billion years
ago amidst a large solar nebula.  As the nebula rotated, it gradually
condensed and flattened due to gravity; as density and pressure
increased, a protostar formed at the heart of the nebula. As the
nebula continued to flatten, a large accretion disk enveloped the
fledgling star system, and ultimately gave birth to planets and
satellites.  

There are eight planets in the Sol System, including Earth, capital of
the United Federation of Planets.  Pluto, the honorary ninth planet,
is actually a large member of the Kuiper Belt, a large cloud of rock
and ice left over from the accretion disk.  Since Pluto's discovery in
1930, similar "planetoids," such as Sedna and Quaoar, have also been
discovered.
