NOTES |
The Defiant class was first conceived in 2365 in response to the newfound threat proffered by the Borg. The class incorporated several new design elements, including quantum torpedoes, ablative hull armor, and pulse phaser canons; the design was intended to be tough, simple to build, and possess the maximum amount of firepower possible. The class, however, was overpowered to the point of dysfunction; the Defiant faced problems with structural integrity and warp flight, and when the Borg attacked Wolf 359 in early 2367, the Defiant was unable to participate in the battle. With the Borg threat somewhat lessened in the aftermath of Wolf 359, the Defiant project was summarily abandoned in favor of the Sovereign Class. This changed in late 2370, when the USS Odyssey was destroyed during the disastrous first contact with the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant. With the first Sovereign still years from completion, Commander Benjamin Sisko requested the Defiant be assigned to station Deep Space Nine to protect against a Dominion attack. His request was granted, and after several years of modifications, the Defiant's inherent problems were eventually resolved. The Federation was initially hesitant to sanction production of additional Defiant Class vessels, given its status as a warship, however the advent of Dominion War erased all doubt of the Defiant's capabilities. |
