First commissioned in early 2399, the Explorer-class is a versatile starship designed for both
scientific and tactical missions.  Starfleet intended to use the ships in short-range missions
that would be staged out of starbases, and typically last several months, up to a year.

The Explorer-class is also one of the first Federation vessels to employ experimental
quantum slipstream technology, enabling it to reach reasonable speeds without reliance
on the Federation's dwindling supplies of dilithium.

Stationed out of Starbase 54, the USS Columbia was one of the first Explorer-class vessels
on the front lines during the conflict with the Elorg in late 2399 and early 2400.  It played a
pivotal role in several key engagements, including the assault on Eredas-Il on stardate 77109.
The Explorer-class (also known as the Chimera) model used throughout this site was
created and graciously provided by Skye Dodds.
