| The Magellan Class is a small, fast starship dedicated to scientific and exploratory missions. It was first launched in 2400 to help bolster the Federation fleet on the front lines in the scientific community. The Magellan Class is equipped with 5 prototype sensor pods that greatly extend sensor range and sensitivity; it also has state-of-the-art temporal facilities. Another new and experimental feature of the class is the detachable warp drive system; in the event of an emergency, the warp core and both nacelles can easily be jettisoned from the ship. Similar functionality was employed in older starships, such as the Galaxy class, but in the event of a cataclysmic event, much of the ship was still destroyed. Starfleet hopes the streamlined system will dramatically decreased damage to the ship and crew. At present, there are four Magellan Class starships in service. The Majestic NCC 90102, under the Command of Captain Erin Keller, was first commissioned in early 2400 and immediately traveled to Tal Qirat, where it played a pivotal role in the conclusion of the Elorg War. |
