NOTES
With the advent of the Elorg War in 2395, Starfleet initiated the Valiant project intending
to simply upgrade and enhance the Defiant's systems.  The project was initially successful,
but the rapid worsening of the Elorg crisis in 2396 led Starfleet to abandon the Defiant
project and instead design an entirely new starship based upon the Defiant's schematics.
The resulting Valiant Class starship maintained the look and feel of the original Defiant,
though it was slightly larger and much more capable of handling the powerful systems
available to it.

The Valiant also rectified one of the Defiant's most glaring shortcomings.  Capable of
sustaining warp 18.3 for three hours, the Valiant is easily one of the fastest ships in
Starfleet.  Some firepower was sacrificed to achieve these speeds, but compared to other
starships of its size, the Valiant is easily the most powerful.

The first six Valiant class vessels were commissioned in early 2400, and were thusly able to
participate in the final engagement with the Elorg Bloc in February of that year.
