| The Mek'hlar Class was first designed in the early 2320s as a replacement for the aging K'Tinga Class. Smaller and more maneuverable than its predecessor--but every bit as powerful--the Mek'hlar was supposed to become the Klingon Empire's premiere attack vessel. However, the advent of the Federation's Ambassador Class starship prompted the Klingons to delay the Mek'hlar in favor of designing an all new, much larger class of attack warship, the Vor'cha. The Mek'hlar remained in a state of flux for many years before the first ships were launched in 2360. However, after the initial unit run was built, the Klingons again scaled back their efforts in order to concentrate on designing larger warships. It was not until the end of the Elorg War in 2400 that the Mek'hlar began production en mass. Most of the remaining K'Tinga Class vessels were destroyed during the conflict, along with a great many Birds of Prey. With a sudden need for small, maneuverable ships, the Mek'hlar was quickly called back into action. The newly upgraded Mek'hlar was given a rudimentary transwarp system and armed to the teeth, able to carry 65 quantum torpedoes--unprecedented for a vessel of its size. At the dawn of the 25th Century, the Mek'hlar is the new face of the Klingon Empire. |
