NOTES
The origins of the Sovereign Class can be traced back to 2338, when the relationship
between the Federation and Klingon Empire had degraded nearly to the point of war.
However, Klingon intervention during the battle of Narendra III allayed those fears, and
plans to create a new breed of warship were scrapped.

First contact with the Borg in 2365 prompted the resurrection of the Sovereign Class.  In
response to the Borg treat, Starfleet intended to equip the Sovereign Class with an
impressive array of new weapons, including quantum torpedoes and an auto-modulating
shield system.  When it became apparent such technology could not be created in time to
face the Borg, Starfleet instead designed a smaller warship that ultimately became the
Defiant Class.  The first Sovereign Class starship was commissioned several years later, in
2372.

The Sovereign Class Enterprise-E saw combat a year later, in late 2373, with the advent of a
second Borg attack.  The Enterprise performed well during the conflict, ensuring the
Sovereign Class a place on the front lines in nearly all future conflicts, including the Elorg
War in the 2390's.

The Sovereign Class remains one of the most powerful vessels in Starfleet, and the class is
expected to remain in production for several years to come.
